Because of Anya
Author: Margaret Peterson Haddix, 2002

A touching and moving story about a ten-year-old girl who was afflicted with Alopecia Areata, and had to wear a wig to school. It captures some of the issues she would have to face at school. And how other kids reacted to her wearing a wig. Although it is only a fiction, but nonetheless, it gives a very real anecdote of the inner feelings of a young alopecian and her loved ones.... what went through their minds, their concerns and how they handled the situation. Have a tissue with you, you could be moved to tears anytime with Margaret's flowing style of writing.....more

Alopecia Areata, Understanding and Coping with Hair Loss
Author: Wendy Thompson, Jerry Shapiro, 1996

This book is a good general all rounder for people with Alopecia Areata. It has sections for children and adults. It talks about coping, treatments and the latest research. But because of its American focus context, certain things may not be applicable to those outside of America, for example insurance claim for wig. However, overall this book is very useful and if you were to buy one book on alopecia I would suggest you buy this one..... more

Coping with Alopecia
Author: Nigel Hunt and Sue McHale, 2004

Written by two psychologists, one of whom has got alopecia, this book covers alopecia areata, totalis, universalis and androgenetic. It covers all aspects from the physical symptoms, possible causes and treatments, to the psychological impact and the possible affects on morale, relationships and work. Has the feel of a well researched work. Quite blunt at times but factual and with helpful, illustrative case studies. I found it very useful. It certainly covered all the areas of alopecia I was hoping to have explained, and dealt with them in an easy to understand non-technical way. Not for the faint-hearted, but if you can face having your worst fears graphically described it is a very honest book and a useful work of reference.....more
